In Nigeria today, cultural festivals are one of those agendas that must be done at least once in a year. Out of these festivals, only three are well recognised across the country, the Calabar carnival, the argungun fishing festival and the new yam festival in eastern Nigeria.
The new yam festival is a cultural festival celebrated by the Igbos in the south-eastern part of the country. These festivals also known as Ofala festival is celebrated annually between August and September.

These festivals are observed in western Africa, mostly by ndi Igbo in eastern Nigeria. These indicates the period of first harvest of the year and to thank God for the blessings he bestowed upon his people. It is done with full happiness and at the same time meant for everyone.
